My newest passion is BERGAMOT! I love it in my Earl Grey tea every morning, and now the scent in our new line of soaps and lotions from The Perth Soap Company! It’s scent is a fresh, soft fruity smell with just a hint of spice. Perfect for the new spring season.
Here are a few fun facts for you:
Bergamot orange is a small, roughly pear-shaped citrus fruit, which grows on small trees known as Bergamots. It is a cross between pear, lemon and Seville orange or grapefruit. You will find Bergamot growing in Argentina, Brazil, The Ivory Coast but most production is along the coastal region of South Italy, where the growing conditions are ideal. The plant is named after the Italian city of Bergamot, in which its oil was first sold.
The fruit is not edible. The plant is grown solely for it’s essential oil which is expressed from the ripe fruit peel and is used extensively in perfumery for its sweet freshness. Bergamot oil is also used for flavouring purposes, such as in Earl Grey tea, candy-making, in aroma therapy to treat depression, and also as a digestive aid. Also, Bergamot oil is used in the production of both feminine and masculine perfumes.
Next time you sit down with a warm mug of Earl Grey tea, see if you can pick up on the scent of the Bergamot. Who knows…you may start noticing the aroma in other areas of your life!
